The History of Shutters
Shutters have been around for 3,000 years and will continue to provide function and beauty for many years to come. However, the trend has been clearly to wider panels and larger louvers. The shutters in A below were installed in 1890. They were double hung, bifold, small louvers, small panels. By the 1960's louver widths had evolved to 1.875" and 2.5". Fabric panels were also popular. The popular shutters in the 1990's were 3.5" louvers. Today the nicer homes typically get 4.5" wide louvers and with wider panels. Large louvers are not limited by window size or home style. 3.5" front center tilt remains traditional but today's modern shutters are 4.5" louvers, side tilt, rear tilt or hidden tilt. View, light control, openness are more important today than before.
